was.

What is your driving force? Is it religiously inspired
based on western values?
'I was born in Stavanger in the south of Norway, a
city near the North Sea. I stem from a social demo
cratic Lutheran background with a strong labor party
tradition. Around the start of my puberty I realized
what kind of privileged life I lived and actually also
a little bit dull. I became fascinated by the conflict
between rich and poor and found inspiration, as
many in sixties and seventies did, in the Sandinista
movement and in figures such as Fidel Castro and
Che Guevara. The Cuban revolutionaries did good
work in health care but it did not take me long to
find out that they also made enormous mistakes
because of the intolerant and repressive nature of
their regime. In short, I was fascinated by the big
dramas of the world and I was looking for chal
lenges.'
You receive the Freedom from Want medal because of
your role in, among others things, the realization of the
Oslo-Accords. That is now more than ten years ago. Could
you name global problems which you want to address
significant teruggelopen.
massavernietiging in toekomstige conflicten.
which stand in the way of the realization of the Four
Freedoms?
'First of all we cannot deny that the world has become
a better place in the past decade. There is more peace,
the number of poor people has dwindled significantly,
there are fewer refugees and health care has become
accessible to more and more people. But I see three
threatening clouds on the horizon. In the first place
climate change, which is caused by among other
things a huge consumption explosion. One of the
effects is the increasing shortage of food the world is
facing. The second even more imminent threat is the
use of weapons of mass destruction in future con
flicts. Not only do an increasing number of states have
access to nuclear technology but also it is fairly easy
for terrorist groups to acquire the ingredients and
technology to create such weapons on the black mar
ket. The third is the growing tension between 'East'
and 'West' where the latter is perceived as the champi
on of fundamentalist capitalism and the former seen
as fundamentalist Islam. We need to break down this
wall. An inspiring symbol would be when Hamas and
Israel start to negotiate to achieve peace.'
