oneert uitstekend.
Middelburg zal zitten zullen mijn gedachten vanzelf
Stavanger.'
membership of the EU for the second time I was
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. The political
elite, employers and labor organizations were clearly
in favor of membership. But the people rejected it
because there were no economic or social reasons.
There is hardly any unemployment in Norway and
the social security system functions extremely well.
It was a close finish. 51 percent was against and 49
percent in favor of membership. I regret that to this
very day because the EU has made war in Europe
virtually impossible and made its inhabitants afflu
ent. Norwegians are individualists and idealists at the
same time, thus the slogan of the adversaries 'It is
far enough to Oslo so why go to Brussels?' hit home.
Nevertheless I am convinced that Norway will become
part of the EU sooner or later.'
Last question. What does the Freedom from Want
medal mean to you?
'I am very happy to receive the award and it is of
course a great honor. I am also glad to visit the
Netherlands once more, a country that is closest,
in terms of foreign policy and development aid, to
Norway. I still consider the Nordic model which inclu
des the Netherlands as one of the best societal models
in the world. When I am in the church in Middelburg
on 24 May, my thoughts will automatically go back to
1968, the year I visited the Netherlands for the first
time as a soprano in the Stavanger Cathedral Choir.'
