in Roosevelt het onderwerp was. Hermans: 'Roosevelt
regeerde het machtigste land van de wereld in een roe
rige periode. Vooral de (blues) rootsmuzielc uit die tijd
vertolkt de gebeurtenissen en emoties. Vaak bijna let
terlijk want het zijn net gezongen krantenberichten'.
De New Deal bezongen
FDR werd bezongen vanwege zijn opmerkelijke New
Deal, waarin voor de overheid een actieve rol in de cri-
sisbestrijding was weggelegd. Naast alle lofzang vond
Hermans ook tracks waarin de president niet zo posi
tief naar voren komt. Hermans: 'Vooral de afro-ameri-
kaanse gemeenschap vond dat Roosevelt zijn beloftes
niet altijd waar maakte.' Niet alleen de eigen interesse
was leidend voor het uitbrengen van de cd inclusief
publicatie. 'Jammer genoeg hoor je vandaag de dag,
zeker in Amerika, bijna niets meer van deze muziek
uit de jaren '30 en '40. En dat is zeer spijtig, want er
zitten enorme muziekschatten tussen. Ik hoop ook
stiekem een beetje dat de luisteraar door onze cd geïn
spireerd raakt de originele tracks te gaan beluisteren.'
Om het hele project extra volume te geven, schreef
Hermans zelf een boekje met historische achtergron
den. De publicatie plaatst de muziek over FDR in
de context van zijn tijd. Champagne Charlie is, mede
dankzij de gastmuzikanten, erin geslaagd een bijzon
der staaltje muziek af te leveren. Waitin' on Roosevelt
heeft voor ieder wat wils: blues, cajun, old time coun
try, calypso, western swing, jazz en folk.

country in the world in a turbulent period. In particu
lar the (blues) roots music from this time voiced these
happenings and emotions. Often almost literally,
because they're just like sung news reports'.
Singing the New Deal
FDR was celebrated because of his remarkable New
Deal, wherein a crucial role was played by the state to
alleviate the crisis. Alongside all the praise, Herman
also found tracks in which the president wasn't so pos
itively portrayed. Hermans: 'The Afro-American com
munity in particular felt that Roosevelt didn't always
hold true to his promises'. But it wasn't just self-inter
est which led to the release of the CD and accompany
ing publication. 'It's a pity that nowadays, certainly in
America; you almost never hear music from the 1930s
and 40s. And that's a real shame, because there's a
wealth of musical treasures there. Secretly I hope a
little that the listeners of our CD will be inspired to
go and listen to the original tracks'. To give the whole
project extra volume, Hermans wrote the booklet con
taining historical background information himself.
The publication places the music about FDR in the
context of his time. Champagne Charlie, thanks to the
help of the guest musicians, successfully pulls off an
extraordinary musical feat. Waitin' on Roosevelt has
something for everyone: blues, cajun, old time country,
calypso, western swing, jazz and folk.
