The Battle for the river Scheldt De Slag om de Schelde
Whilst Operation Market Garden (Battle of Arnhem,
September 1944) always gets the focus of attention,
the operations to liberate the banks of the Scheldt
seem to draw less public attention. Their aim, to
secure the Scheldt-estuary to enable Allied use of the
Antwerp-harbours, was no less crucial. There were
six operations: Vitality I, Vitality II, Switchback,
Infatuate I, Infatuate II and Mallard. Polish, Canadian,
British and Scottish divisions in joint-operation
conducted them with the Zeeland-resistance during
the months of September, October and November
1944, within a six-week timeframe. More than
10.000 soldiers and civilians remained to be mourned

The course of these operations can thus be followed.
The veterans of these operations still consider them
as a sheer hell, due to the fanatical resistance that
the cornered Germans still managed to put up.
Especially West-Zeeuws-Flanders was bombed to
ruins. This also was the case for Walcheren, that was
even flooded to ease the victory and liberation. The
eyewitnesses of this war have kept their silence for a
long time, but those still amongst us share the need
to document their memories and emotions for
posterity. The many memorial services, which were
well attended, are a sign this message still reaches
the young people.
Because of the English language background of
many of the veterans who will be attending these
memorial services, the editors have decided to
publish the greater part of this issue in both English
and Dutch. It is for the first time that this Zeeuws
Tijdschrift appears in the English language. It is a
tribute to the liberators of Zeeland, to whom we
shall always remain grateful.
Terwijl de operatie Market Garden (Slag om Arnhem,
September 1944) altijd in de schijnwerper staat, is aan
de succesvolle operaties die tot doel hadden de oevers
van de Westerschelde te veroveren en de vrije toegang
tot Antwerpen te verzekeren tot op heden veel minder
aandacht besteed. Ze hadden plaats van september tot
begin november 1944 en het waren er zes: Vitality I,
Vitality II, Switchback, Infatuate I, Infatuate II en
Mallard. Ze werden uitgevoerd door Poolse, Canadese,
Britse en Schotse divisies en het Zeeuwse verzet.
Meer dan 10.000 militairen en burgerdoden vielen er
te betreuren.
Het verloop van die operaties is terug te vinden in
de bij dit nummer gevoegde kaart Slag om de Schelde,
september-november 10)44. De veteranen van die opera
ties beschouwen ze nog als een grote hel door de
fanatieke tegenstand die de in het nauw gedreven
Duitsers boden. Vooral West-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen
werd volledig platgebombardeerd. Dat gebeurde ook
met Walcheren dat tevens geïnundeerd werd om de
verovering te vergemakkelijken. Lang is er door de
ooggetuigen over deze oorlog gezwegen, maar de nu
nog levenden beseffen dat ze hun herinneringen en
emoties aan het nageslacht moeten meedelen. De
druk bezochte en vele herdenkingsplechtigheden zijn
een teken dat ze een (jong) gehoor gevonden hebben.
Vanwege de Engelstalige achtergrond van de bij
die plechtigheden aanwezige veteranen van die opera
ties, heeft de redactie besloten het overgrote gedeelte
van de Nederlandstalige artikelen in die taal te vertalen.
Het is voor het eerst dat het Zeeuws Tijdschrift mede in
het Engels verschijnt. Het is een saluut aan de bevrij
ders van Zeeland die we voor altijd dankbaar zullen
blijven.
